The Rock Subculture Journal 2016 Year In Review (Top 10 Live Music Concerts, Top 5 Albums, Top 50 Songs, and more…)

January 12, 2017 by Jason DeBord Leave a Comment

As with my 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 Year in Review features, this article looks back on a year of music with a summary of the highlights. This year, I attended about 35 shows, with hundreds of different sets of incredible talent and music to make sense of, not to mention trying to keep up with all of the studio releases from artists, new and old. This is my attempt to (subjectively) share my favorites of the year, from live shows to new songs and albums. You can also check out my Top 100 Concert Photos of 2016 in that separate article.

Grouplove at Fox Theater | Oakland, California | 10/6/2016 (Concert Review + Photos)

“Oakland, San Francisco, how the hell you doing tonight? We played here almost six years ago opening up for somebody… Who here was there? Was anybody there at the show? I’m just sayin’, I do see a lot of people who have been with us all six years, and for all of you who have come to all these shows, all these years, thank you so much!” Andrew Wessen, guitarist of Grouplove, a band who always has their gratitude and appreciation on display. They played a scorcher at a packed Fox Theater on Friday night, supporting their third studio album, Big Mess. Just one date into their new U.S. tour running through the end of the year (followed by dates in Australia), they sounded and performed better than ever. One of my favorite live acts, they put on a high energy show that had the crowd bouncing throughout, embracing the excellent new songs as much as the favorites. Definitely a must see tour. The latest album, produced by Captain Cuts (Grouplove’s Ryan Rabin) and Phil Ek is characterized by their signature sound and style, and may be their best yet. With their “Big Mess World Tour”, one dollar for every ticket sold will be donated to the organization charity: water to help fund water projects like drilled wells, spring protections, and BioSand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world. The Rock Subculture Journal 2013 Year In Review (Top 10 Live Music Concerts, Top 10 Albums, Top 100 Songs, and more…)

Jason-DeBords-Rock-Subculture-Journal-Concert-Live-Music-2013-Year-In-Review-Top-10-Songs-Albums-Concerts-News-Media-Tour-Guide-Photography-FI

As with last year’s 2012 Year In Review, reflecting on the many shows attended in 2013 and trying to make some sense of it all was a challenge.  Having attended nearly 100 events, which usually includes at least one supporting act and a headliner, as well as one 10-day festival and many multi-artist shows, I saw literally hundreds of sets.  Miraculously, I can probably count on one hand the number that were “bad”, and the majority were awesome in one or more ways.   Still, I feel it is important to highlight the best of the best of the best, in an attempt to celebrate an amazing year of music.  You can also check out my Top 100 Concert Photos of 2013 in that separate article.

The Top 50 Best Songs of 2013 (So Far…) – A Rock Subculture Journal Editorial

Rock-Subcuture-Best-Music-Songs-2013-List-Singles-Artists-Pop-Alternative-R&B-Electronic-Dance-Favorite-Playlist-FI

This feature is really born out of my own music playlists…  I thought I would take my latest current playlist and break it down to music that was published in 2013 and limit it to 50 songs.  Also, the songs have to be off of albums that came out in 2013 (not singles released in 2013 for albums that debuted in 2012).  My only other restriction was limiting it to no more than one song per artist.  Oh, and no covers…  Included is a lot of music that I enjoy that likely include artists that some readers have never heard of, so hopefully this will result in some people finding new music and new artists.  The songs are not ranked in an order of preference, but more in a flowing, playlist style.  In any event, 2013 is a great year for new music… [Read more…]

GROUPLOVE “Seesaw Tour” (Night 1 “Heavy”) at The Independent & (Night 2 “Light”) at The Chapel | San Francisco, California | 9/14/2013 & 9/15/2013 (Concert Review)

GROUPLOVE-Seesaw-Tour-2013-Concert-Review-Heavy-Light-Acoustic-Spreading-Rumors-Live-Rubens-San-Francisco-FI

“We do it for love, sweet love…” Fittingly, the final words sung on stage both Saturday and Sunday night in San Francisco by GROUPLOVE, from their hit song, “Colours”.  Playing back-to-back shows as part of their special run of their “Seesaw Tour”, performing at two small venues in select cities, doing one traditional show and one acoustic-style show, each night featured a different kind of show, almost as if seen, heard, and felt through a kaleidoscope that shifted not just night to night, but within each show.  GROUPLOVE is a band with probably the best energy of anyone playing today – such joy and positivity beaming not just from the speakers at the venues, but from the artists themselves – their expressions and jumping around, and interactions with the audience.  The funny thing is that the audiences and shows kind of played counter to expectations, with the “heavy” night at The Independent skewing older and more mellow and the “light” night at The Chapel being much more youthful and boundless, which seemed to fuel the band into rocking their acoustic instruments on the tiny stage, which could barely contain them.  Two incredible shows that delivered well beyond expectations.
