The Cure Tour 2016 To “Explore 37 Years of Cure Songs…” While Traveling The World

The-Cure-Tour-2016-Concert-Live-Cities-Dates-Tickets-FI

Alternative music legends The Cure are kicking off their first major U.S. tour in seven years next month, with dozens of shows and festival appearances.  After back-to-back shows in Hawaii in July, the band then plays dates throughout the rest of the world, all culminating in a series of shows at SSE Arena in Wembley in December.  I’ve had the good fortune to have seen them play a few times in the past few years (in Honolulu and London) and I cannot fathom how they will be able to play so many dates in such a fashion, with their endless setlists of endless hits and rare tracks alike.  In any event, the world is in for a treat, as they are one of the best bands of my generation, and they put on some of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. As with my 2012 and 2013 Year in Review features, it’s always a challenge to reflect back on a year of music and summarize the highlights.  Honestly, I don’t know if I will have have a year that beats 2013, which was an incredible one for me with a lot of travel as well.  This year, I ended up attending 60-something shows, most with two or more artists, so hundreds of different sets of incredible talent and music.  As such, I feel it is important to highlight the best of the best of the best, in an attempt to celebrate the year that was. You can also check out my Top 100 Concert Photos of 2014 in that separate article.

The Cure (for Teenage Cancer Trust) at Royal Albert Hall | London, England | 3/29/2014 (Concert Review + Photos)

“It’s not my instrument; for the last time…”  Not very talkative during a concert, a funny line blurted out by Robert Smith, front man for The Cure, after returning a cowbell to the side of the stage, during a sprawling set that ran continuous for nearly four hours, with no less than three full encores.  The second of two nights playing to benefit Teenage Cancer Trust, The Cure played sans opener, coming on a about 7:30 and performing 29 songs…  then the came back for a six song encore…  then another seven song encore…. and finally a last three song encore.  The sound was amazing, and the band was brilliant.  An amazing evening with a stellar crowd, at a historic venue, all for a very worthy cause – it doesn’t get much better than this show…

The Rock Subculture Journal 2013 Year In Review (Top 10 Live Music Concerts, Top 10 Albums, Top 100 Songs, and more…)

Jason-DeBords-Rock-Subculture-Journal-Concert-Live-Music-2013-Year-In-Review-Top-10-Songs-Albums-Concerts-News-Media-Tour-Guide-Photography-FI

As with last year’s 2012 Year In Review, reflecting on the many shows attended in 2013 and trying to make some sense of it all was a challenge.  Having attended nearly 100 events, which usually includes at least one supporting act and a headliner, as well as one 10-day festival and many multi-artist shows, I saw literally hundreds of sets.  Miraculously, I can probably count on one hand the number that were “bad”, and the majority were awesome in one or more ways.   Still, I feel it is important to highlight the best of the best of the best, in an attempt to celebrate an amazing year of music.  You can also check out my Top 100 Concert Photos of 2013 in that separate article.

The Cure “The Great Circle Tour” at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena | Honolulu, Oahu in Hawaii | 7/30/2013 (Concert Review)

The-Cure-Concert-Review-Tour-2013-Honolulu-Hawaii-Neal-S-Blaisdell-Arena-Photos-Robert-Smith-Meet-and-Greet-FI

Playing on stage for nearly three and a half hours, with just two 2-minute breaks and almost no in-between song chit chat, The Cure was all about songs and performance at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Oahu last night, making the legendary band’s first ever concert in Hawaii maybe one of the best for those lucky enough to score tickets at the sold out arena.  Last night’s rocking show was all about fan service, from the sprawling 38-song set list to the special meet and greet opportunity for those who were able to get one of the coveted front row seats on the floor; the decades old group that is impossible to categorize played a dream set of many of their seemingly endless catalog of hits, spanning their entire career. Though they’ve been one of my own favorite bands since the 80s, I haven’t seen them live since their Wish Tour in the early 90s. I’ve been to over 60 concerts so far this year and with that probably have seen sets by well over 100 artists, and I would definitely rank this as one of my Top Three shows so far in 2013. Having traveled special to the islands for this special concert event – part of their “The Great Circle Tour” – it was definitely more than worth it as it was an unforgettable experience.
